It’s looking like we’re finally in for some rain here in Listowel. Here at Listowel Ford we care about your safety when driving! We thought we would take a moment to review some tips for driving safely in inclement summer weather. Driving in the rain and wind may not seem like the most pressing safety concern for drivers. But, realistically, any type of severe weather can significantly increase risk and the potential for dangerous situations!
First and foremost, severe weather demands your undivided attention. Turn the radio down and turn off your phone to reduce any potential distractions!
Driving Safely in the Rain
Driving in heavy rain creates poor visibility. Make sure your windshield wiper blades are in good condition. Windshield wiper blade should be replaced every six months to a year, or as soon as you notice a difference in driving visibility. When your wiper blades no longer make contact with the windshield surface, they can begin to squeak, chatter, and skip on your windshield. This can cause smears or streaks which reduce visibility.
As we all know, driving in the rain can also cause your vehicle to hydroplane. Hydroplaning occurs when a vehicle is travelling too fast in heavy conditions. This causes your tires to travel along a thin layer of water as opposed to gripping the road surface. Steering and braking become more difficult, and it is more likely that you will lose control of your vehicle. The only way to prevent this is by slowing down. The most dangerous time to drive during rainfall is actually when it starts, because oils on the roadway combined with water make for extra slippery conditions.
Be sure to turn your headlights on to both improve your visibility, and make it easier for other drivers to see you coming. It’s important to give vehicles in front of you more space, and allow for an extra second or two of following time in the rain. This will give you and drivers behind you more time to react to traffic.
Driving Safely in High Winds
Driving in heavy winds tends not to be a concern at the top of drivers’ minds. However, heavy winds can definitely be dangerous while driving! It’s important to anticipate wind gusts, which can push your vehicle slightly off its intended path. Be aware of larger vehicles, and give them space. We all know that TONS (no pun intended!) of transport trucks travel through Listowel and the highways surrounding it. These vehicles are susceptible to high winds and drivers may have difficulties staying in their lanes. In windy weather, keep a firm grip on your steering wheel in case the wind starts to move it. This is especially important if you are driving a pickup truck, minivan, or towing a trailer!
