F-150 Lightning Charging FAQ
The following are answers to some of the most common questions about charging the Ford F-150 Lightning.
What charging options are available with the F-150 Lightning?
- The Mobile Power Cord, capable of 30 Amps (A) charging on a 240 Volt (V) and 120V outlet, comes standard with the 2022 F-150 Lightning and is available for purchase (through your Ford Dealer) with the 2023 model year F-150 Lightning.
- The F-150 Lightning’s extended-range battery and included 80A Ford Charge Station Pro charging equipment (which requires professional installation) provides the fastest home charge, connected features and available Ford Intelligent Backup Power*.

What charge level is recommended for daily driving of the F-150 Lightning?
Ford recommends that you charge to 90% for everyday driving and charge to 100% when you need the full range for a trip. Charging to 90% helps prolong the life of your battery.
Can the F-150 Lightning charge other electric vehicles (EVs)?
Yes, with the Mobile Power Cord and an additional aftermarket adapter (P/N 691944Y sold separately by Parkworld), the Pro Power Onboard feature will allow the F-150 Lightning with the 9.6kW option and F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid with the 7.2kW option to charge other J1772-equipped EVs.
How fast can the F-150 Lightning charge?
Using a 150kW+ DC fast charger, the standard-range 98kWh pack can charge from 15-80% in about 36 minutes. The extended-range 131kWh pack can charge from 15-80% in 41 minutes**.
**Range and charge time based on manufacturer computer engineering simulations and EPA-estimated range calculation methodology. The charging rate decreases as battery reaches full capacity. Your results may vary based on peak charging times and battery state of charge. Actual vehicle range varies with conditions such as external environment, vehicle use, vehicle maintenance, lithium-ion battery age and state of health.
Can I use Ford’s Intelligent Backup Power with a competitor solar or battery setup (like Tesla Powerwall)?
Visit Qmerit’s website to have a local licensed electrician review your current solar or battery setup to see if it is compatible with the Ford Charge Station Pro for the Ford Intelligent Backup Power.
Note: The Ford Charge Station Pro would need to be installed with the Home Integration System (planned 2024 availability).
What happens if I run out of charge on the road with my F-150 Lightning?
Ford Roadside Assistance can help. You can choose to have your vehicle towed to either the closest public charging station, the nearest participating Ford EV-certified Dealer, or your home residence. If outside of a 25 kilometre radius, Roadside will tow the vehicle to the nearest available charging station among the three options. Ford Roadside Assistance is included with your F-150 Lightning for five years/100,000 kilometres (from date of sale to whichever comes first), with the option to extend after that.
Can non-Ford vehicles charge with Ford’s home chargers?
Yes, the Ford Mobile Power Cord and Ford Connected Charge Station use the J1772 plug, which is the North American industry standard. It works for most all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles using the industry standard J1772 connector. There is an aftermarket adapter for Teslas to charge on J1772 charge plugs.
Note: The Ford Charge Station Pro uses a Combined Charging System (CCS) plug. Therefore, the Ford Charge Station Pro can only charge an all-electric vehicle that uses the CCS connector (commonly used at public DC fast charging locations).
What is required to get the Ford Intelligent Backup Power working in my home?
In order to get the Ford Intelligent Backup Power installed and working so that your Lightning F-150 will be able to send power to your house during an outage, you will need the Ford Charge Station Pro and the Home Integration System (planned 2024 availability), which will be sold through Fordcharging.ca and will include an inverter, microgrid integration device, dark-start battery, and cellular connection.
Can I use Ford Intelligent Backup Power with my Mustang Mach-E or E-Transit?
Not at this time, but you can charge the Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit on the Ford Charge Station Pro. Note: Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit will charge at the 48A rate even
